Chinese five-spice powder is a spice- blend  that commonly consists of five herb components : Chinese cinnamon, cloves, fennel seed, star anise, and Szechuan peppercorns. There are different variations to the 5 spice powder components where other ingredients like ginger root, turmeric, cardamom, licorice, nutmeg, orange peel and galangal may be used.

The combination of herbs when cooked will produce all the 5 flavours like sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. It is a very commonly used ingredient in Chinese cuisine and cooking, where it is added as marinade to meat or poultry stewed, grilled or roasted and as a seasoning in the breading for fried foods.
